LA YOGA
In LA, we've got yoga to fit every lifestyle and body. From Bikram's "house of pain", 90 minutes of sweaty "bend down and push" calisthentics to spine-bending Ashtanga yoga. LA yoga studios cater to serious yogis as well as cellulite-free leg models; yes, you can look good walking the spiritual path to nirvana, and you need not battle traffic to do it. There are plenty of metro-friendly yoga studios in town.
Types of Yoga Defined:
Hatha- The granddaddy of all yoga. The classic 84 yoga postures; all other styles of yoga were birthed by Hatha.
Bikram- Hot sweaty yoga that gets you slim FAST. Ninety minutes of basic yoga poses that detox and tone every organ in your body. An LA yoga speciality, Bikram yoga was founded in Los Angeles.
Anusara- Playful, meditative. The class starts with a chant to open your heart center. A great class for the beginner-intermediate yoga student. Proper alignment is also emphasized.
Kundalini- Powerful energy yoga, emphasizing chants and postures that raise the energy from the base of your spine up to your crown chakra.
Ashthanga- For the advanced gymnast. Think a lone yoga man doing splits in the air while balancing on one hand. We're too intimidated to try it.
Vinyasa Flow- Moving from one posture to the next in a series, hence the flow. The emphasis is on connecting breathing with movement in and out of the postures.
