Premiering multicultural plays by Asian American writers and Pacific American-themed works, including musicals. They also bend the boundaries of our cultural expectations by casting Asian American actors in Southern fried classics such as Crimes of the Heart.
The first of it's kind, celebrating 50 years, East-West Players is a also a theatrical multicultural dialogue between Asian-American actors, writers, producers and non-asians. East meets West. Casting Asian-American actors in non-stereotyped roles was a major emphasis for the theater group who sought to tear down the "hollywood" roles they were traditionally cast in - "the karate bruce lee type," "the erotic exotic asian woman," "the foreigner with an accent," were the roles that asian actors played for a western audience.
So if you want to see actors break-out of the stereotype, chew on new material, expand and take a bite out of the crusty old mainstream hollywood portrayal of asian-americans, check out East-West Players. |
