Trader Culver

The average Trader Joe's market is a mixture of heaven and hell. Guiding your shopping cart along the aisles of reasonably priced fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, Belgian Beers, imported cheeses, blue Agave syrups and bizarre items not normally found dipped in chocolate is as close to a celestial grocery experience as you can have. Negotiating – did we say negotiate, we meant battling – a Trader Joe's parking lot, especially on a Friday or Saturday afternoon can be so hellish that going hungry is a vialble option. Which is why we're grateful to Germany's Albrecht family, the stern but hands-off overlords who own the grocery store chain, for locating one of our favorite Culver City markets so close to the Metro Rail Station. www.traderjoes.com

This farmers market is just a block long, but it's packed with fruits, vegetables, nuts, seafood vendors and homemade baked goods. Standout prepared foods include Peruvian and Hawaiian chicken, plus barbecue beef, its alluring aroma wafting through the dreadlocks of local guitarists who entertain the shoppers. The market is held on Tuesdays from 3 PM to 7 PM, year around, rain or shine and is located on Main Street between Culver and Venice Blvds. www.farmernet.com
