actors gang

A relative newcomer to the downtown Culver City theater scene, the Actors Gang stages provocative and experimental new plays, as well as revisionist updates of classic fare. Founded by a group of young actors and directors including Tim Robbins (Bull Durham, The Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River, Dead Man Walking), the Actors Gang is noted for their unique acting style, which emphasizes broad physical comedy, cinematic flourishes and a larger than life view of reality. The company's famous alumni include Helen Hunt, John Cusack, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, and Jack Black. www.theactorsgang.com

Kirk DouglasOperated by the Center Theatre Group, who also run downtown LA's Ahmanson Theater and Mark Taper Forum, the Kirk Douglas is an intimate, 317 seat Culver City theater. Built in 1947 as a streamline-moderne movie palace that seated over 1,000, the Kirk Douglas has been lavishly and lovingly renovated. There's not a bad seat in the house, so you can actually follow emotion on the actors' faces. They stage classics, revivals, musicals, adventurous modern plays, holiday-themed revues, magic shows and off the wall productions like Hip Hop Shakespeare. The Kirk Douglas often expands its repertoire by teaming up with famed theater companies such as Second City.
