Since 1880, LA's captains and captainesses of industry have caballed and mingled at this downtown power bastion; now you can join them. Unique among downtown Los Angeles hotels, the LA Athletic Club hotel grants their guests access to the spa, fitness facilities, Olympic-size indoor pool, basketball, tennis and squash courts and rooftop wine-tasting soirees. If we have to choose between staying at a soulless business hotel or this legendary club where Olympic athletes have trained and history has been made, the choice is clear. Let other guests roll up in their Benz's and Porsches while you arrive on the Red Line. www.laac.com

The grandest of the grand downtown Los Angeles hotels. Romanesque, rococo, Spanish-Mission, gilded, frescoed and marbled, the Biltmore is from an era when hotels were destinations unto themselves. And the bar pours "The Black Dahlia martini", which makes the noir buffs among us feel all cozy. www.thebiltmore.com

Four floors of "ultra" in the new 52 story silver-blue tower that also houses luxury condos. Ubiquitous uber-chef Wolfgang Puck opened his latest restaurant WP24 at the Ritz, the most budget-busting of our downtown Los Angeles hotels. If you're arriving by chopper, you'll have to jostle for landing space with Laker star Kobe Bryant, who recently bought the penthouse, complete with helipad.
