American diner food, updated and hip-ified. Tasty, healthy comfort foods like burgers, potato salad, mac and cheese, milk shakes and French dip. Semi-retro decor that Yelp reviewers like to call "fun." You must have a reasonable tolerance for hipsters and their overheard conversations; "dude, my band opened at Spaceland last night and we blew the headliners out the door," but it's open 24 hours. www.fred62.com

Owned by a CalArts grad who opted out of gallery hustling to create unreal ice cream recipes, including peppermint tiramisu, Lung Ching tea with ginger and vegan hazelnut espresso. Famous for their brown bread and Oreo Mascarpone ice cream, we've heard rumors of a caramel-bacon flavor, but have yet to try it, as the menu changes constantly. If you can't find it here, ice cream probably isn't your dessert of choice.

Address: 4854 Fountain Ave., Los Angeles 90029

One of our favorite lunch and breakfast restaurants, neighborly and hormone-free. Square One specializes in local, organic produce, which they whip up into creative, healthy comfort foods. We presume that the egg cartons lining the ceiling are cage-free. They are deservedly famous for their bourbon pecan French Toast and once you've had their Neuske's bacon, you'll wonder is there any other kind?
