The most civic-minded of our Los Angeles farmers markets is held on Thursdays, on the south lawn of City Hall. While Mayor Villaraigosa plots his latest romantic conquest and the City Council tries to dream up ever more fiendish parking fines, you can dine on grilled food, and stock up on hand-made items, and fresh vegetables and fruits.

grand central market

Feeding Angelenos since 1917, Grand Central Market is Los Angeles' oldest and largest market. On the ground floor of the historic Homer Laughlin Building-- famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright had an office here--Grand Central Market is one of those stimulate my major senses and overwhelm me kind of places. This international food store with its high ceilings and open sides has the feeling of an open air market. The colors, the flavors and diversity of foodstuff make it hard to see everything in one day if you are a serious foodie. So take it in small doses and go back for the kabobs. www.grandcentralsquare.com
