The savviest among the downtown let's do lunch crowd, know that Langer's makes the best pastrami sandwiches in L.A. We think so, too. It's not cheap, but the #19 with their homemade cole slaw usually satisfies pastrami junkies. Local gang activity in the late 1980's compelled Langer's to close for dinner. Although the neighborhood has improved in recent years, they're still only open for breakfast and lunch. www.langersdeli.com

Mama's is a cozy, colorful tamale house across the street from MacArthur Park. They also hand make tamales for many of those lunch trucks that roll through the city, trailing savory salsa and cornmeal exhaust. Plus it's a jobs training program and an artists co-op, so mama wears many hats. In addition to their authentic tamales , Mama's serves unexpected items like Peruvian quinoa tabbouleh and coffees from around Latin America. Cool furniture, and south of the border art make Mama's one of the most colorful lunch restaurants in town.
