Monastery of the Angels- where Catholic spirituality meets baked goods. Founded in 1924 by Mother Mary with devotion to the guardian angels. This small cloister of Dominican Nuns living in the Hollywood hills recites the litany of the holy angels in the Chapel of Perpetual Adoration and makes pumpkin bread. They sell other things in the gift store as well, but everyone goes back for the pumpkin bread. |

It takes some doing to get there, under the freeway through a winding street uphill, hidden under the rush of freeways. The Vedanta Society opens the path to understanding the "Vedas", the philosophical basis of Hinduism. The teachings pre-date Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. If you are curious about the oneness of existence, the delusion of maya, karma, reincarnation and the harmony of religions; browse through the bookstore, a comparative religion gem crowded with works that reflect the City of Angels' eclectic spirituality. The Hollywood center is open daily for worship. www.vedanta.org |
