Legend has it that a young music fan entered Amoeba records and didn't emerge for three years. Concerned friends finally found the avid record collector curled up in a remote corner of the warehouse-sized store, buried under a mountain of CDs, gleefully listening to a disc he'd been hunting for years, reportedly a one-of-a-kind live version of Fela Kuti and Johnny Cash dueting on covers of AC/DC songs.

In business for over 70 years, Larry Edmunds Book Shop is Mecca for movie buffs in Hollywood. It's a hands on browser's paradise, crammed to the ceiling with 20,000 movie and theater books, 6,000 original posters and half a million movie photos. When owner Jeffrey Mantor reaches into his overstuffed filing cabinets to find that signed photo of Dorothy Dandridge or Kim Novak, the tattoos of Rita Hayworth and Anita Ekberg on his biceps tell you the guy knows his stuff. They host book signings by authors, stars, starlets and stuntmen. They often run their signings in partnership with the nearby American Cinematheque, combining film scholarship with screenings of classic movies. Recent events have included tributes to Glenn Ford, Jean Harlow, Errol Flynn, film noir tough guy Charles McGraw and America's sit-com Jeannie, Barbara Eden.
