Southern California's other theme park is just across the street from a metro station. Universal Studios theme park is many attractions rolled into one frenzied, family-friendly world of thrill rides, special effects shows and behind-the-scenes moviemaking. Quiver in terror as the shark from Jaws tries to make you his lunch, cower at the giant feet of King Kong in 3-D, run for your lives from the DNA-gone-amok dinos from Jurassic Park, pale in fright as you make your way through the suburban madness of Desperate Housewives' Wisteria Lane. As you tour the back lot, home to sound stages and producers' bungalows, you may not see your favorite mega-movie star, but you will most certainly spot actual blue-jeaned writers (and their actual agents named Josh) heading off to a pitch meeting. Universal Studios isn't cheap, so check their website for special offers, such as 2 days for the price of one, or discounted combination tickets with Disneyland. Parking is at least $15, so go Metro. www.universalstudioshollywood.com
